A water inlet valve is an important part of your dishwasher as it is responsible for supplying your dishwasher with water.
However, even a small malfunction in the dishwasher's water inlet valve can lead to significant issues. These can include water leakage, insufficient cleaning, mold development, the appliance not filling up, or detergent not dissolving completely.
If you need to test or replace the dishwasher's water inlet valve but are unsure where to start, there’s no need to panic.
We’ll walk you through how to replace it successfully so you can restore your dishwasher's performance and avoid costly professional repairs.
What is a dishwasher water inlet valve?
The water inlet valve controls the flow of water into the dishwasher. It is responsible for allowing water to enter the dishwasher during wash programs and cycle and halt the flow when necessary, ensuring proper operation and water management.
Signs that your water inlet valve is not working properly
If your dishwasher exhibits the following symptoms, it is likely a sign of a faulty water inlet valve.
- Less water flowing into the dishwasher.
- Leaks fill the dishwasher when it’s turned off.
- Unusual noises during the water-filling process.
- Dirty dishes even after the dishwasher wash cycle.
- Debris clogs the hose, creating a buildup on the valve.
How to replace a dishwasher water inlet valve?
Follow the steps mentioned below to replace a faulty dishwasher water inlet valve.
- Turn off the dishwasher’s power supply by unplugging the main power cord. Remove the screws securing the toe kick at the bottom front of the dishwasher to open the service panel.
- With slip-joint pliers, loosen the hot water hose couplings at both the inlet valve and the water supply valve beneath the sink.
- Once more, using the slip-joint pliers, squeeze the ends of the fill hose clamp together and slide it up the hose. Then, detach the fill hose from the inlet valve.
- Mark the wires on the inlet valve with masking tape to indicate their positions. Next, use long-nose pliers to disconnect the wires from the terminals.
- Use an adjustable wrench to remove the inlet valve mounting bolts and remove the valve itself. Then, bring it to an appliance service center to ensure you get the right replacement.
- Bolt down the new inlet valve to secure it in place. Then reconnect the wires and fill the hose and hot-water hose.
- Regain power, open the water supply valve under the sink, and inspect for leaks. If necessary, tighten the hose couplings.
